CHAPTER NINETEEN

CAIN

Idon’t like that I had to ditch Ezra for work the next morning.

But I don’t want to let important operations slip just because I’m falling into something addictive with him. I can barely keep my fucking hands off him. Forget trying to push him out of my head at this point.

Rorik’s made good progress at the shipyard, covertly setting up a deal with Gabriel’s guys to get us access through the north gate this evening. He’s an irreplaceable asset to my company. His skeletal tattoos and natural scowl have allowed him to meld seamlessly into numerous criminal organizations.

I have three teams set to deploy. Mine, Rev’s, and Rorik’s. That’s thirty-three people. Should be a slaughter.

I text Alaric to send the teams detailed layouts of the property in time for our meeting.

Remember not to kill all of them. We need that encryption code.

I sigh, hating the idea of having to haul scumbags back into the building. I hate the idea of leaving Ezra alone tonight even more. I don’t even want him in the same city as Gabriel. Don’t want anyone to ever lay hands on him again.

Except for me.

My fingers hover over Salem’s number, but I know she’s on protective duty watching over Jakey. I dial my brother, Isaac, instead.

“Hey, Cain. What can I do for you?” Isaac’s cheery voice sounds. He’s the only one around here besides Salem who has any fucking manners. Gwen pretends to be polite because she gets paid to act that way, but I’ve heard the shit she calls people behind closed doors and under her breath.

“Do you think you could entertain a friend of mine this evening?” I ask, loading into the elevator with two of my guys, Forest and Nick, who double as accountants during the day.

They both peek over at me as I hit the button for lower level one, and I fight the urge to tell them to mind their own business. I suppose it is a bit of a shock to learn that their workaholic, anti-social boss might have friends.

Although, I don’t categorize Ezra as a friend. My thoughts involving him are far too devious.

“Sure thing,” Isaac replies. “Is this friend your pretty little thief?”

Fucking rumor mill around this place. Then again, no one has seen me with a partner in over a decade. And after the office rearranging incident, I have to wonder what Rev disclosed to everyone to calm them down about their shit being touched.

Last time Rev held an informative meeting I couldn’t attend, he told everyone that I had explosive diarrhea. I knocked out one of his teeth in the boxing ring that night. Cost him ten thousand in dental work.

“Don’t start with me,” I warn. “Can you take him to dinner at Madora Estates? He’s got family there. Salem’s posted up on watch.”

Getting to meet Ezra would have been enough of a temptation for my overly curious brother, but I know Isaac would never turn down an opportunity to spend time with Salem. They’re a good fit for each other.
